All Stores Were Open Within One Week of Hurricane Sandy

WHITEHOUSE STATION, NJ — QuickChek believes in being prepared.

After Hurricane Sandy cut off power to nearly 85% of the fresh convenience market chain’s stores following the superstorm on October 29, 2012, it took only one week for all of the company’s then 130 stores to be up and running.

With Sandy’s five-year anniversary approaching, QuickChek has announced that all 65 of its store locations that serve fuel throughout New Jersey, New York’s Hudson Valley and Long Island have permanent generators or emergency transfer switches which allows for a mobile generator to be brought to the needed site to quickly restore power within hours.

QuickChek has permanent generators at 24 store locations that sell fuel to guarantee that 24-hour service is available to meet the needs of first responders and local communities in 10 New Jersey counties.

The Whitehouse Station, NJ-based fresh convenience market chain has contracts with local suppliers to provide mobile generators at 41 locations throughout the metropolitan area within hours notice so that the company can serve fresh food and fuel in the case of emergencies with several stores located on or near designated emergency evacuation routes.

QuickChek applied for and received grants to install permanent generators in qualified store locations as part of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s Retail Fuel Station program in 2014.

New stores in Monroe Township, Brick Township and Toms River (opening Oct. 31) are also equipped with cell phone and laptop charging stations in each store’s indoor seating area.

QuickChek was able to rebound so quickly in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy because it was prepared, alerting its generator contractor that it would need generators ahead of the impending storm. Once the superstorm hit, the company moved generators from stores where power was regained to others that needed power. This system worked as planned as all 110 stores that had been affected had power within days after the record-breaking power loss and ensuing gas-shortage crisis.

The family-owned company then partnered with local customers, store team members and vendors to raise $110,569 for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund that supported the recovery and rebuilding efforts of communities impacted by the storm.

One of those areas still rebuilding is along Route 37 in Toms River, which will be the site of the newly designed QuickChek fresh convenience market of the future. The new 5,496-square-foot-store will create 50 new local jobs and generate approximately $1 million in tax revenue. It is scheduled to open Oct. 31.
